安田さんの｢ブラウン運動の虚実｣ 佐々田友平

安田さんの｢ブラウン運動の虚実｣には、私も(多分多くの人々と同様)啓発された一人です。手元にある The Feynman Lectures of Physics には次のようにある。
while he(Brown) was studying microscopic life, he noticed little particles of plant pollens jiggling around in the liquid he was looking at in the microscope, and he was wise enough to realize that these are not living, but were just little pieces of dirt moving around in the water.
別の箇所で little particles = very tiny particles(colloids) としている。ちなみに、１μm 以下の粒子を colloid といい、それ以上を suspension というから、
花粉≠粒。安田さんが指摘する意味です。平田森三、坪井忠二という自他ともに認める物理の好事家がこのざまとは。日本の｢知性｣というのはこわい。｢ＰＳＳＣ物理｣の訳文には、｢花粉の小粒子｣とありますが、原文は Feynman と同じと思う。”of”が花粉についての無知にうながされて、｢即ち｣と解されてきたのでしょう。
序に、私にとって Brown motion = Langevin equation = 可逆力学系におけるランダム性の発生・生成のメカニズム。文学部物理学科卒といわれる所以です。 (93.5.8)
